SEGUIN - Reagan Doyle and the No. 11 Industrial Lady Cobras had to make one defensive stop on Saturday in the Region IV-3A final game against No. 14 Odem to make school history.
Doyle and the Lady Cobras relied on what they do best.
With eight seconds left in the game, Industrial's defense forced Odem into a contested shot as the Lady Cobras defeated the Lady Owls 28-26 at the Goldie Harris gym.
"We just knew we couldn't let them shoot a 3-pointer because Odem is very good at shooting 3s," said the senior point guard. "We just had to rely on what got us here, which has been our defense. Coach (Shannon) Taylor tells us all the time that defense wins, and it did today."
The win extended Industrial's winning streak to 19 games and advanced a the Lady Cobras to the state tournament for the first time in school history.
"It's amazing," Doyle said. "There's no words to describe how I'm feeling. I'm just filled with so much emotions right now."
"It's wonderful for the girls because it shows how hard they have worked all season," Taylor said. "It's something that they have earned and deserve."
Industrial will face either Brock, Mount Vernon or Marlin at 1:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. Thursday in a Class 3A state semifinal at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
An announcement will be made Sunday on who Industrial will play and at what time.
Odem called a timeout before the last possession of the game and Industrial head coach Shannon Taylor reminded the Lady Cobras to apply pressure.
"In the timeout, we talked about not giving up a three," Taylor said. "The girls did a great job of contesting the drive. If they would have made, it they would have earned it. Chloe and Kylann came down with the rebound and they did that all game."
Odem ends the season 33-7.
All points scored in the fourth quarter were all free throws from both teams.
The Lady Cobras hit seven free throws with three coming from Caeil Taylor, two coming from Desiree Hill and one free throw a piece from Chloe Darilek and Doyle.
Doyle's went to free throw line after being fouled after a layup attempt with 1:03 left in the game. Doyle missed the first free throw but made the second to give the Lady Cobras a two-point lead.
"You just have to relax at the free throw line," said Doyle, who has played on varsity since her freshman year. "Free throws win games. You just have to control and have focus when you shoot them."
For the fifth straight game in the playoffs the Lady Cobras defense held their opponents to under 30 points.
"Last year we were out of the playoffs after the first round and now we're headed to the state tournament," Caeli Taylor said. "This is amazing to be going with these group of girls and especially for these seniors. We truly are a family. We play for each other and we are always their for one another."
The Lady Owls finished the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 14-13 lead on Industrial at halftime.
Odem's Juliana Alcala knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:28 left in the third quarter to put the Lady Owls up 22-19 on Industrial.
Alcala had a game-high 10 points for the Lady Owls.
Industrial's Kylann Griffith hit a layup as time expired to cut the Lady Owls lead to one, 22-21, at the end of the third.
Industrial will play in its first state tournament game on Thursday and will continue to practice hard to prepare.
"We will go through some video and look at our opponents," Shannon Taylor said. "We will stick with what has gotten us this far. We will get some fresh legs and hit the practice court."
